Project overview

The project was commissioned by Babbage Consulting/Circular Plastics, a joint venture between Pact Group, Cleanaway, Asahi Beverages, and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners.

The facility, located in Laverton North VIC, aims to recycle more than 20,000 tonnes of PET plastic bottles annually. GPS Electrical Services was entrusted with the electrical infrastructure, including the installation of Motor Control Centres, Main Distribution Switchboards, and an extensive network of motor and control cabling.

This extensive project demonstrates GPSs capability to produce within tight deadlines, without compromising quality or safety.
Key challenges
  • Tight Timelines: One of the most pressing challenges was the tight project schedule. Imported equipment needed to be unpacked, reassembled, and installed by other trades before our electrical work could commence. This put a significant strain on our team to accelerate the cable tray installations without compromising on quality or safety.
  • Building Constraints: The facility's structural limitations added another layer of complexity. The requirement to support all cable trays on posts, rather than using the existing building structure, necessitated additional planning and engineering. This constraint also increased the time needed for installation, adding pressure to an already tight timeline.
  • Coordination with International Teams: The project involved close collaboration with Italian AMUT engineers, requiring us to adapt to different working styles and communication protocols. Weekly, and later daily, cabling progress reports were essential for synchronising our efforts with the AMUT team, ensuring that the project stayed on track.
  • Quality Assurance Under Pressure: With the clock ticking and multiple stakeholders involved, maintaining the high-quality standards GPS Electrical Services is known for became a challenge in itself. The team had to conduct rigorous testing and commissioning in a shorter time frame, ensuring that there were virtually zero defects.
Given the scale and complexity of the project, effective resource allocation was crucial. The team had to be agile, often working extra hours and days to meet the project's demands while ensuring that safety protocols were strictly adhered to.
Project outcomes

Meeting the project's tight timelines was a significant achievement, largely thanks to the GPS team's willingness to put in the extra hours and days required. This commitment ensured that all milestones were reached on schedule, allowing the client to kick off their operations without any hitches.

The quality of the installation was nothing short of exceptional, evidenced by the near-zero defects in the wiring. This wasn't just a showcase of our technical skills but also a reflection of our stringent quality assurance protocols. The Italian AMUT engineers overseeing the project had nothing but praise for the high standards we maintained.

The project also stood out for its seamless integration and commissioning. As our teams completed each MMC, they were handed over for the client's own commissioning process. This phased approach allowed the Italian AMUT engineers to get the facility up and running quickly.

Safety was a non-negotiable aspect of this project, even under the pressure of tight deadlines. This unwavering commitment to safety ensured a smooth commissioning process and a project without safety incidents.

The positive environmental impact of this project cannot be overstated. By bringing this facility to life, GPS has contributed to an operation capable of recycling over 20,000 tonnes of PET plastic bottles each year. This aligns with broader sustainability goals and highlights our ability to contribute to projects with a positive environmental footprint.

The accurate measure of the project's success lies in its completion and the stakeholders' satisfaction. Babbage Consulting/Circular Plastics expressed high satisfaction levels, further solidifying GPS Electrical Services' reputation for reliability, technical precision, and problem-solving.
